The Forge Kitchen
The elemental symbols in this play were the aspect of time,
being in the right place at the right time and time standing still
for Miss Havisham; and doors, those opened for you or closed
against you.
The set consisted of the large portals that resembled the gate at Miss Havisham’s, and a large revolve with a central platform. Props and simple scenic elements suggested the social and economic standing of those who live inside. The set looks cool.
Jaggers' Office In the forge kitchen, the table and benches
were the popular Norwegian style with wooden
pins. At the lawyer, Jagger's, office, Pip saw
carved wooden chairs with padded seats for the first
time in his life. As we follow Pip in his adventure,
we see him move from his meager surrounding in the
apartment with Herbert, to the stuffed wingback chairs
of the uptown flat when Pip is spending beyond his
means.

Miss Havisham“Director Jeff Frank oversees some imaginative touches. Carriage wheels are mimicked by twirling umbrellas. A device used to turn the set doubles as blacksmith Joe’s anvil.

“This flair is always present in the design elements, Hunt’s set is a canny combination of naturalism, imagination and common sense. One of her many bright ideas is to platform Havisham’s lair in the middle of the turntable, which makes it resemble a wedding cake ornament.

“Sarah L. Hunt’s turntable set is a marvelous chameleon.”

The Gate
This portable unit of iron and wood created the entrance to Miss Havisham’s house. It represented the concept of doors being open to Pip or closed to him. Later in the play, when Miss Havisham’s house was to have burned, the dilapidated ruins were indicated simply by pulling a pin and turning the ‘H’ askew.
