At the center of this play is a working class family whose lives stopped
with the news of their second’s sons handicap. Everything in the house
was kitchy and tacky, yet retained an honest sincerity. The dominance
of the father and the traditional values that are inherent in the
household are exemplified in their blue collar and Catholic attitudes.
| If the family’s life stopped, their environment also remained unchanged — this was the starting point for the design. So everything in the house was from 1969 or earlier. The Christmas ornaments and handmade decorations spoke of the good years previously known by the family.
